Finished Cafe with garden line & wash
So I decided to paint the people and now it feels finished.

So I decided to paint the people and now it feels finished.

I think I posted this in wrong place so I am posting here too. My first time drawing in public and using fine liner directly, no pencil sketch first 😳. Hence the wonky window lol. I am not sure about painting the people or leaving as is. Does it look purposeful or does it look unfinished? This is La Central de Raval, a bookstore/cafe/garden courtyard.

I'm not happy with this duck yet I'm not quite sure why. All the positions of the wings and head and their angles seem to match the reference photo, yet it still doesn’t look right. I think maybe the duck is at a slightly unexpected angle and I needed to think more about the shading, as with the flying duck. And maybe the head is too small and the beak too big.
Despite all that I have really enjoyed duck week. Thank you Irene for all the inspiration and helpful comments.

I enjoyed the reference pic so much that I drew it two ways

So even after giving Jane the unsolicited advice about her shorter front wing, my front wing is not even as good as hers 🙃But with the Pentel brush pen control of angles is not really possible.

I enjoyed doing this, couldn’t get over how quick it was despite all that drawing! I decided it would be a lovely place to drink tea so there are two cups of tea on the table.

Looks as if it's frowning down its beak at me!
I am really struggling with duck proportions (something I could never before imagine myself even thinking about lol ). I am guilty of erasing 3 or 4 attempts before settling for this.

The wings don’t look quite right to me, the one in the foreground looks too small or perhaps at the wrong angle. I think this duck would fly around in circles

I haven’t drawn for almost 72 hours (since the plane) and for some reason I felt very shaky and I really did not like my sketch. Also I think I am not accustomed to drawing in fineliner, which has much harsher lines imo than ballpoint or pencils So since I felt there was nothing good to ruin, I decided to add color with the ecoline markers I brought with me on vacatiiin. And I feel the color really saved the drawing.

I really love using a soft pencil and blending stump

Done on the plan on the way to Lisbon. No turbulence so any irregularity is all me lol

I had fun painting this, love the effect of spattering the red onto a mixture of dry white paper and wet yellow paint. It’s like the cake is having a party!

Home from a very rainy and windy holiday, so today I have had time to do all the sketches from this week.

I love iced tea when I am in the USA but it is not very common in Europe. So instead I get iced latte. I got a little confused with the iced cubes, but they are kind of confused in the reference pic too, so I think it works lol

I really enjoyed putting down the color blobs. I’m starting to enjoy that technique of color first, lines later. I used this opportunity to test the color palette of ecoline markers I bought for my upcoming trip. The colors are very vibrant but I like them together. I also got a pastel rose and beige for my light colors in my limited palette.

Maybe a little over board with the hatching lol.

Not my first sketch of the day but still wonky lol.

My first (lady) and second (man) portrait from the colourful portrait course.
I feel like I'm making progress both at drawing the faces and also the colour layering. I felt much braver layering colours on my second attempt and filled more of the space. I was a little scared to use the green, but wow it works so well! Loving the lessons! 😀 Thank you.

I almost got the perspective right lol. I wish I had just stuck with the leg cast shadows, I don’t know what that square mess is under the chair lol. Maybe a week spent in cast shadows?

Here's my line and wash door. It’s a bit wonky but that makes it look even more ancient. It reminds me of a holiday to Portugal where the back streets of the town were a treasure trove of interesting doors.

I didn’t do a pencil sketch first, and I started with the neck a little too long in pen so I moved the face down but ended up with a particularly fluffy and long top of the head lol.

I think these sketches show that you don’t need to be good at doing something to enjoy it! I don’t think I would risk sitting in any of my chairs but I had a lot of fun drawing them. I found some old coloured ballpoint pens in my stash, which I used for the first and last sketches. The green one has gone a bit blobby which added some unexpected texture!

I thought I already posted this chair, but I don’t see it. My appolgies if it is a duplicate. As I struggled with perspective my chair grew and grew until it barely fit on my page lol.

Vulture in Ballpoint. I am enjoying these. In this heat it is easy to go to the air conditioned coffeeshop, get an iced

latte and with just ballpoint and sketchbook with photo and tutorial on my phone create something satisfying
Well this time I didn’t focus on perspective and the chair actually looks more stable lol. Draw what you see not what you think you know 😊

Only after I was trying to finish did I realize that orange ballpoint was not a good choice because I couldn’t get the nose and eyes as dark I would have liked. I am very happy with the chest and the “ruffles”. I’m really enjoying working in ballpoint in general.

I would not trust to sit on this chair. The back right leg seems misaligned lol. But I’m practicing with ballpoint so not much I could do to correct it.

My random blobs suggested rndom things to me, so here's everything from a goldfish to a block of flats! Please don’t try to psychoanalyse me from it!

This was fun and quick. I still struggle with leaving white but I did manage a variety of tones in my background. And I feel I controlled the amount of splatters lol.

I took a pic beforecI painted the door blue. I thinknmatbecI liked it better with the white door. Live and learn lol.

Perspective is always a work in progress lol. There is something wrong with perspective on my seat cushion, it doesn’t seem like it lays flat and recedes into the back of the chair . Maybe it needed to narrow more quickly to the back? Maybe it is too deep? The left side seems better than the right side.

I kind of got lost in the fur and shadows. Sometimes it is hard for me to stay focused But for my first try at ballpoint animal I am satisfied.

I loved drawing this, but the paints in the background didn’t flow into each other as much as I wanted them to. I think maybe it’s because it's a very, VERY hot day and the blue was drying too fast before I had chance to add the other colours. Anyway, it still looks like the out of focus trees and plants around the lake where the swan is swimming, so I'm happy with that.

I really enjoyed the week of noses. It was great practice looking for the subtle variations in shading to create shapes and depth.

That was a good exercise even if I am not a fan of the results. I can copy a reference photo, but my imagination needs practice lol. Also if my painting was looser, I would have more interesting shapes to create from. I will definitely try this again later. But for now, this is what Ai created.

Fourth nose. I like the nostrils and the perspective on the bottom part of the nose, but I think i got the bridge too thin.

Good thing I’m not a perfectionist 😉It took me many attempts to get proportions I was satisfied with, and I’m still not 100% convinced. And I got a little carried away with the squiggles for the feathers and gray for the shadows. I think in this case less would have better. But I am happy with my background and the contrast between the muted orange in the background and the vibrant orange of the beak.

I love creating doodle patterns. It's so therapeutic and I could spend hours.

I was very happy with this until mum got very confused about the sheep was....not so happy now 😂
I went with a 8 colored pencil lead pencil I got last year. It’s a novelty item but actually works good for sketching on the go. But too hard for doing a whole pic is colored pencil. But it has pink and red so I went with that combo. I’m not sure about the nose but I do like the way the far eye peaks out beyond the nose.

This was nice and relaxing to draw and paint. I love using the Pentel brush pen

I had never noticed how different noses can look until this week, I always think of a nose as just something to sit your glasses on! When I did the final one, I immediately pictured one of my grandmothers, it's almost 60 years since she died yet this nose brought her whole face back to me

I love the scribbly ballpoint pen approach. And who knew I enjoyed drawing noses lol.

Re do of the water lilies line and wash. I like this one better. I used thin fineliner on the water lilies and it made them look. lighter and more delicate imo.

First nose and actually first time I drew a nose in detail.

I really enjoyed painting this. Doing the background first made the image seem to pop out of it.

I went a bit outside the box with this one. I zoomed in on the photo and chose abstract sections of the plants and leaves. I used Winsor & Newton Promarkers. My plan is to use the thumbnails to do some abstract still-lifes on canvas with acrylics.

I used HB pencil and a blending stump for this. I love the way I am starting to see shapes in things now, it makes it so much easier to understand how to draw them.

Line and wash Waterlilies. I used my pentel brush pen too outline my waterlilies and a very fine fineliner on my lily pads. Probably should have done the lilies with the fineliner and the pads with the brush pen lol.

So I finally used more paint and less water and I really like how vibrant this is although I think there was blue in my water or my brush so my oranges are a little muted orange. I was going to leave my jug white but I liked the green so much with the orange and blue that I made my jug green too lol.

I felt like a change from line and wash today, so I painted a scene using the things I learned while doing the abstract watercolour landscapes course. It felt strange painting on my own, without Irene's voice to guide me!

I went to the Miro museum today day and I was inspired to do this master study of Miró’s L’or de l’atzur (“The Gold of Azure”), from 1967. I painted the background with regular acrylic paint and then used my acrylic markers and fineliners. I didn’t have the exact colors but did the best I could.

My fishing boat. I used to love sea fishing from a boat when I was in my teens, I think I might go back to this and add the name of the boat I used to go on.

The rest of my fruit pictures. The tangerine is my favourite but that's probably because I've got totally hooked on using a blending stump.

My fishing boat. My colors are not as vibrant as Irene’s. I think I have to be braver. I put down some very vibrant red for the door and I thought omg that is too much, but probably if I had let it dry it would have toned down to just the vibrancy I wanted. Next painting I will be bold.
And if you are wondering that is a cat on my boat looking over the side. My 12 year old cat died last year and I still miss her. in her remembrance I add a cat to all of my landscape like paintings. All of my wobbly houses, my camper car, by beach house have a small cat silhouette somewhere.

Did the “raspberry” again in water soluble ink.i guess now it is more of a blackberry.

Cottage by the sea. It wasn’t until I'd finished that I realised I have the perspective on the stone path exactly wrong, or perhaps it's actually a narrow path that widens out to a courtyard for the cottage?

Raspberry in ball point

Even though my banana is oddly thin, I kind of like the way the ink bled. And I really like

this color ink.
I do love working in graphite, but it makes such a mess when you blend. I had to erase the space around my tangerine not to erase mistakes but to erase smears 🤣

Pineapple in graphite. I enjoyed creating the texture.

Not very happy with this one and I know why! In a moment of thrift I dug out the cheap watercolour paper I bought years ago when I tried once before to learn to paint, thinking I ought to use it up. It doesn’t say on the pack what weight it is, what it’s made from or how it was pressed. And however much water I use, the paint just sits there. It doesn’t blend, it doesn’t move around, it doesn’t follow the water. Lesson learned, the rest of the pack is going on my scrap paper heap.
Also, one of my fish looks so sad I think he just lost Nemo.

First two sketches for fruit week. I used graphite and a blending stump for both, and went in with an eraser pencil for some highlights on the strawberry

Beach house line and wash. I will have liked to leave more white, but working in that.

I absolutely loved this exercise. I chose to do peppers using gouache and posca pens.

This is what the Bic 4 color ball point pen was made for. lol

My bridge might be a bit hard to walk over, but perhaps there are steps behind those stone walls! I'm not feeling quite as scared of white space now

I’m on the fence about this one. But I did kind of reduce fiddling and I did leave some white space.

Final shoes in Pentel. I am really enjoying this pen. And I have multiple pairs of Birkenstocks because I live in them in the summer.

I used a combination of watercolour, gouache, acrylic, Inktense pencils, watercolour pencils, fibre-tipped pens and gel pens for these. Great fun.

I really enjoyed this, very meditative and endless possibilities. This type of exercise is a great starting point when I can't decide what to sketch.

They say you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince. I am still in the frog-kissing stage lol. I used my Pentel brush pen. I waited 3 or 4 mins yet the little fish on the right the ink smeared when I added water. So I used my blow dryer to dry the ink and the little fish in the left still smeared a little. Then I used too much water so my white stripes did not stay white… but I think the yellow and orange in my water is a little better. I will take a break for a while now. Maybe I am trying too hard to be loose

, an oxymoron if there ever was one.
My attempt at loose lilies lol. I really liked my drawing with the Pentel brush pen, although I probably should have drawn larger flowers and larger leaves for this experiment. And I think it shows that I had a really hard time stepping away, not fiddling with it and leaving white space. I think I will practice the technique with more flowers. I think it is even harder for me to not color it all in when there is a scene, like the

camping.
Mistakes were made…lol

I managed a fair stab at the sandals and the Birkenstocks in the end - all my other attemps at the shoes would have been OK if they had been designed for clowns!

Third shoe on the final leg of my flight. I will blame the wonky perspective on the turbulence lol.

Second shoe drawn on the airplane. only a little shaky from turbulence lol

I am waiting to leave for the airport for a 14 hour flight… This is always a stressful waiting period for me so I saved the shoes. Hoping a little art will help me relax

Still not very loose or splashy, but I added some blooms for texture in the sky. I’m satisfied lol. And I really enjoyed the subject.

Vegitables in line and wash. Not completely satisfied with my composition, something I am working on in general. One of my radishes was too close to my broccoli so it ended up it no leaves and a short stem lol.
I feel like the area above the broccoli need something. Maybe a couple of mushrooms? Ther is already much green there that I didn’t want to put more little leaves.

I do not really use Pinterest, but in the Line and Wash class Irene refers to inspiration photos pinned to her Pinterest board. I searched for “makings and musings” and found something in Pinterest, but for example I am starting the Fruits and Vegitable page in the class and do not find and pinned photos of vegetables. Can someone please post the link here? Or tell me how to find the pics? Thank you
I like my loose tree, the perspective on my chair, and my glowing logs. My fire is too dense and once again I left not enough white. I’m having trouble loosening up and not just painting within the lines. Hopefully by the end of the class…
I am thinking of drawing in some pebbles and rocks in my “dirt” because I had trouble getting a texture with my paint and that is a lot of nothingness. Or should I add some dark

spots with paint when it is dry? esp closer to the front to give this area some interest? I do br feel the grass tufts are enough variety. What do you think?

Another fun and joyful piece from the Line and Wash class. I'm getting the hang of my Pentel brush pen now, although it seems to prefer paper that's smoother than my watercolour paper.
Going away for a few days now so this is my last for now. I have done the show sketches but I'm so unhappy with them I'm not ready to share. Will try again when I get home.

Not sure about the wind blowing the ears and hair, but I think I did pretty good getting the 3/4 perspective for the first time. I think the two eyes actually look like the match and they match the angle of the head.

My version has a slightly thinner face, but I am happy with it. And yes the practice of seeing and drawing the shapes in the head has been very helpful. Also I really like the blob technique used here and that we did during technique week. It helps me see the shapes.

I’m kind of happy with my blooms lol. Drawing the neck and a proportional head was quite a challenge. I’m very glad I started with pencil. Once I got the head and neck done when I found there was not room for as much of the legs I wanted, I just went with deeper water lol.

I found the bulldog fun but challenging perspective, esp with the pentel brush pen. So I tried it three times. I still never got the left (farthest) side of the face right, but I do think the other parts got better. But my favorite is the middle one on scratch paper even thoghbI totally messed up his left ear because of lack of control of my pen. lol.

Line and Wash daisy. Jane I’m catching up with you lol. Actually I decided to spread it out and only do one per day, so you are safe in your lead Jane 😉

Second dog - I think it is big improvement in proportions. And of course I love graphite and smudging.

I just couldn’t seem to do anything right with this one. My drawing is terrible, as if I was back where I started a year ago, and my painting crossed that delicate line between "loose" and "a total mess". Maybe it’s because we had people in the house so I wasn’t concentrating properly, or maybe it's the subject matter, because when I was a child our family had a totally disastrous caravan holiday and I have hated caravans ever since.
Oh well, onwards and upwards. I can see that the next lesson is a Highland Cow and I love those.

What a pity I put my hand in one of the brussels sprouts while it was still wet! And my pepper, well, I don’t know what it looks like but I wouldn’t eat one of whatever it is! But I love the beet and the broccoli!
