The short answer

The Sketchbook Circle runs live online sketchbook classes every Thursday at 6 PM UK time. Each class has a theme, a gentle demonstration and time to draw alongside other people. You only need a sketchbook and some simple art supplies to join in.

What you learn in the classes

The classes are about filling a sketchbook and enjoying it, with enough technique to make you feel more confident. Across a month you might try:

  • Line and wash, drawing with ink and adding watercolour on top.

  • Watercolour and gouache for light, colour and atmosphere.

  • Colour pencil, which is a gentle place to start for most beginners.

  • Mixed media pages, where you play with the materials you already own.

  • Artist studies, where we learn from a real sketchbook artist each month.

You do not need one art style. The classes are there to help you play and find what you like.

Made for UK evenings

Many online classes run on American time, which means late nights or waiting for a recording. Ours start at 6 PM UK time, after the working day and before the evening slips away. I teach from St Neots in Cambridgeshire, so you will not need to convert any times. Members join from across the UK, and from further afield too.

Many people join in from the US, Netherlands, Germany, Spain and even Australia!

Is it for you?

These classes suit you if:

  • You want a teacher to show you what to do next.

  • You have art materials at home that you have not touched.

  • You prefer drawing with other people to learning alone.

  • You want to fill a sketchbook without worrying about being good.

They are not for you if you want a formal qualification or an in person studio class. These are relaxed sketchbook classes, taught online.

I am Irene, artist and teacher in Cambridgeshire. I left a career in law to draw for a living, and I still feel a flutter at the first page of every new sketchbook.
