Outdoor Sketching: En Plein Air Painting in Mixed Media

Hi everyone,

I have now uploaded the recording from last night's class. I thought it was such a fun session, and I really hope you enjoyed experimenting with the yellow underlayer.

Starting with an underpainting can feel playful and freeing, and it is such a helpful way to get going, especially on days when you are struggling to start or do not feel quite as creative as usual. Taking away that blank white page can make such a difference.

You can find the recording as the first video in the mixed media section.

If you have a go at the project, I would love to see what you create. Please do share your artwork in the community, as it is always wonderful to see how differently everyone interprets the same reference image.

The small adjustment you did to the sky worked wonders Irene 😊

Evening Glow

Continuing with the Detwent

challenge. Very tricky to get a “glow” with these muted pencils. But blending with baby oil did help a lot. Also I have no orange and no purple.and only blue grey and an indigo blue . I only have the 12 pencil set but I think I needed the 24 pencil set. It was very interesting using baby oil.

What a gorgeous sky! You made your own orange and purple

Dyfi Valley

Enjoyed the session last night. The view I had in my minds eye was a

place we used to visit annually in wales. There was a walk where you

passed a waterfall and at the end of the pathway was a gate with a

wonderful scenic valley view. I am not saying my picture is wonderful

but it brought back a lovely memory from past holidays in the Dyfi

Valley, Snowdonia!

Outdoor Sketching - Plein Air, Mixed Media

I really enjoyed this, and having the underlayer definately takes away that 'scary white page' feeling, and it freed me up to get more creative. It was fun doing mixed media too, just trying out different pencils, crayons and colours, to see what works. And maybe what media to invest in for future creations.

Despite you telling us to try not to overwork the sky Irene, I went and overworked it ....never mind, lesson learnt, sometimes less is more 😊

The sky looks lovely though! It looks like lots of little round clouds (sheep clouds we say in Holland)
