Peacock Feather Pattern

Last night’s session was part of our Nature’s Patterns theme, and we spent some time exploring the beautiful, intricate patterns found in peacock feathers. I went into it thinking this might be a fairly gentle and straightforward subject… but, as sometimes happens, it turned out to be a little more involved than I had anticipated. There is something about repeating patterns and colour layering that asks for a bit more patience and trust in the process.

The recording is now available here in the library - it is the first video in the folder Pastel and Crayon Classes

I worked primarily with wax & oil pastels, although as always, you are very welcome to follow along using whatever materials you have to hand. I mostly used my Caran d’Ache Neocolor II crayons as a base, building up layers of colour, and then added some of my softer Sennelier oil pastels over…

Hope to get time to do this over the weekend. I have a beautiful peacock feather inspired tile that my granddaughters bought for me years ago and will keep it on the table for inspiration

Peacock feathers

I used oil pastels throughout for this. It was very relaxing, just what I needed!

Peacock Feathers tonight

A little reminder that our class this evening is at 6pm UK time

We will be exploring peacock feathers as part of our Patterns of Nature theme. I will be using a mix of oil pastels, wax crayons, and perhaps a few coloured pencils, but please do join in with whatever you have to hand. There is no need for anything specific.

I have been in two minds about whether to draw the whole peacock or not, but I think I am leaning towards focusing on the beautiful pattern and rhythm of the feathers instead, almost like a repeating design. We will see where it takes us… I quite like leaving a bit of space for the session to unfold naturally.

As always, this is about having a bit of fun, experimenting, and enjoying the process together. I am really looking forward to creating with you this evening.

The rare Rainbow Pangolin! I really enjoyed doing this, I love the look of line and wash, there,s something very "finished" about it. I added some metallic gold watercolour to some of the scales
