What are Tempera Paint Sticks?

Hello everyone,

It is time for another Art Materials Review!

This month I am exploring tempera paint sticks – a material I originally bought for a children's workshop a few years ago, but one that has gradually become a real favourite in my own creative practice.

In this video, I share what tempera paint sticks are, how they work, and some of the ways I like to use them. I create a journal page with them and talk about why I find them such a freeing, playful medium to work with.

What I love most is that they are bold, colourful, quick-drying and surprisingly versatile. They can be wonderful for sketchbooks, journaling, mixed media work and anyone who wants to loosen up and create without worrying too much about getting things perfect.

These look interesting. They remind me of the pastels that you used durubg your daily art series. Shortly after that I recieved a few in a subscription art supply box and really liked them so I just got a set to start working with!

Extra Video - How to let your watercolour painting 'Breathe' - loose watercolours

I have had quite a few questions from people recently about how to keep watercolours loose, how to preserve those important white spaces, and how to avoid paintings becoming overworked.

So I have created this video to explain the process in a simple and practical way. I go through brush choices, paint consistency, and the way I move my brush, as well as the importance of stepping back and allowing the painting to breathe rather than constantly adjusting it.

I hope this helps make things feel a little clearer and easier to apply in your own work.

Thanks very much for that, I painted along with the video and feel much more confident that I can handle the brushes and get the right amount of water. Now I need to get rid of the old teacher voices in my head saying "don’t go over the lines" and "don’t leave any gaps"

Art I have been making

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share a little glimpse into what I’ve been working on lately.

In the creative community, we’ve been playing with patterns over the past couple of weeks. We explored ocean-inspired designs, and last night we created some beautiful peacock feather pieces. It has been such a joy to see how differently everyone approaches the same idea.

Over in the Sketch Hub, we’ve been taking a slightly different direction. Rather than focusing on a specific subject like an animal or a plant, we are exploring a range of sketching techniques next week. Each day we practise a different approach, which has been really refreshing and, I think, quite freeing. The bicycle study using negative space will be available from Monday.

I truly love seeing all your creations. It has also been wonderful to see what many of you are making as part of Sketchbook Revival. Please…

I followed Irene’s tutorial on acrylic makers to try out my new brush tip acrylic markers I have tried the bullet tip ones before but I never liked them because you could not control the line width. I really enjoyed these, though it was hard to control lol.

Looks wonderful! I like the soft brush because it feels closer to painting but it takes a little practice.
