What are Tempera Paint Sticks?

Hello everyone,

It is time for another Art Materials Review!

This month I am exploring tempera paint sticks – a material I originally bought for a children's workshop a few years ago, but one that has gradually become a real favourite in my own creative practice.

In this video, I share what tempera paint sticks are, how they work, and some of the ways I like to use them. I create a journal page with them and talk about why I find them such a freeing, playful medium to work with.

What I love most is that they are bold, colourful, quick-drying and surprisingly versatile. They can be wonderful for sketchbooks, journaling, mixed media work and anyone who wants to loosen up and create without worrying too much about getting things perfect.

These look interesting. They remind me of the pastels that you used durubg your daily art series. Shortly after that I recieved a few in a subscription art supply box and really liked them so I just got a set to start working with!

Hi Anne, thanks for sharing! I promise it will get easier! A little practice makes a huge difference.

I think your drawing came out lovely 🥰

Blossoming Tree (sort of)

Derwent is having a drawing challenge and one random participant will win a set of 72 Color Drawing pencils. I love these earth toned pencils but I only have a set of 12. The challenge is to draw something inspired by the prompt using only Derwent Drawing pencils. This is my “entry” for Day 1 prompt Blossoming Tree. I am posting here because it is loosely inspired by Irene’s autumn tree in the Autumn colored pencil class.

Next up is the prompt “Day Trip”. I’ve got to go through the colored pencil class and in the community recordings to see what I find lol.

Thank you for the suggestion but I had already decided to do the tired dog - tired after a day trip lol. Tomorrow’s prompt is Spring Wardrobe. That is going to be a tough one. Any ideas for that prompt lol?

Challenge?

Every July I want to participate in World Watercolor Month but I usually run out of ideas of what to paint for the prompts. This year I bought Irene’s Loose Florals and Bouquets class. There are 8 bouquets in the class. So my personal challenge will be to paint one of these each day of July, and then paint my own loose florals for every day for the remaining 13 days of July. Anyone want to join me?

I think its a great idea! If a few people join in I will host a zoom session where we are painting loose watercolour flowers together.
