🌊 Tonights class: Erin Hansen and Ruby Beach
We are going to be studying the work of Erin Hansen Tonight.
An American artist who is known for her vibrant, expressive style called open impressionism. Her paintings are full of movement, texture and light, and I absolutely love how alive they feel.

The artwork we will be using as our reference is her beautiful painting Ruby Beach. We will look at her bold use of colour, her brushstrokes and the way she builds up the scene, and then I will guide you step by step as you create your own study of this piece.

🎨 What to bring
I will be painting along with you using watercolours and gouache, so if you have those, they are perfect for this class.
Gouache or acrylic paint will work well for this class as the colours are opaque and we can layer them on top of one another.
You will also need:
Watercolour paper
A few brushes (one larger, one smaller is plenty)
A jar of water
Kitchen roll or a cloth
A pencil and eraser if you like to sketch first
If you only have Gouache or Acrylic paint (pens), that is absolutely fine. You can still follow along and get a lot from the class.
🌿 Why we are doing an artist study
An artist study means we are learning directly from another artist’s work. By painting from Erin’s Ruby Beach, we get to really understand how she uses colour, how she moves her brush, and how she creates such energy in her paintings. This is a wonderful way to grow as an artist, and it often helps you feel more confident and free in your own work too.
Your painting is for your own enjoyment and learning, and if you share it, it should be credited as a study after Erin Hansen. That way we are learning from her work with care and respect.
I am really looking forward to painting this one with you. It is going to be full of colour, movement and a lot of creative joy.
