Abstract Space Watercolour Workshop
Hello lovely creatives, In this recording, you are joining me for a peaceful painting session where we explore the wonders of outer space using watercolours.
Watch Here:
This workshop is part of our July theme Places and Spaces—but this time, rather than choosing a travel destination, we are taking inspiration from the night sky and the beauty of the universe.
I show you step-by-step how I approach abstract painting using NASA photographs as my starting point. We play with deep blues, purples, and shimmering accents to create something expressive and personal. You will see how I layer paint, blend shapes, and add textures to bring movement into the artwork.
You do not need to have painted a galaxy before. This is a relaxed and beginner-friendly session, and you can paint along at your own pace. I talk you through my process and give tips for blending, texture, and layering.
Materials I used:
Watercolour paper (I use cold-pressed 300gsm paper) in my strathmore 400 watercolour sketchbook.
Masking tape
Watercolour paints (Payne’s Grey, Indigo, Ultramarine, Violet, and Gold or Silver)
a water containers
Large and medium soft brushes
White gouache or bleed-proof white, a white gel pen and some metallic pens
Hair dryer (helpful for speeding up drying)
Pencil (for light sketching)
There is no right or wrong in this session—just come with a sense of curiosity and let your imagination lead the way. I hope this class gives you space to pause, reflect, and play with colour.
Warm wishes, Irene x
