Travel Journal Workshop - Visual Thinking with Bel Meo

This workshop aims to provide tools for participants to create their own travel records beyond just photos.

Writing down and preserving our thoughts has always been a very human thing to do. Just as with drawing, writing is a way of creating images and symbols that carry meaning. It helps us make sense of the world and leaves behind traces of who we are.

Think for a moment about your own handwriting. The size of your letters, the space you use on the page, the tools you prefer – all of these little choices tell a story about you. In this workshop, we will take time to reconnect with the practice of writing and reflecting, this time through the lens of travel.

You may have seen travel journals that come with pre-made pages for notes, expenses, or itineraries. They can be useful, but today I want to invite you to try something more personal and creative. With just a simple, unlined notebook – or even loose sheets of paper – we will explore ways to capture our journeys that go beyond words alone.

Instead of long diary entries, I will guide you through playful techniques that combine writing with drawing. We will use keywords, colours, lettering, arrows, icons, and little sketches to create pages that feel lively and meaningful. I will also share a themed “visual dictionary” with ideas for drawing travel moments – things like transport, food, weather, clothing, and emotions – so that you always have inspiration at hand.

For this workshop, you only need:

  • A sketchbook or notebook with a sturdy cover, or any paper you have at home

  • A black pencil

  • A ballpoint pen (my favourite is the Uni-ball Lakubo 0.7, but any smooth pen will do)

  • Any art materials you enjoy – coloured pencils, markers, watercolours, inks…

  • And if you have them, little travel souvenirs like tickets, postcards, or photos that you can add to your pages.

Together, we will create travel journals that are not only practical but also beautiful and deeply personal – journals that truly reflect the way you see and experience the world.
