This is my new Podcast Episode:

10 Tips to Start a Creative Art Practice in 2025

As we step into 2025, many of us are setting new intentions and goals for the year ahead. If one of your resolutions is to tap into your creative side, then you're in the right place! Starting a creative practice doesn’t have to be daunting. Whether you're a beginner or returning to your artistic journey after a break, it’s never too late to embrace creativity and start making art.

In my latest podcast episode, "10 Tips to Start a Creative Practice in 2025", I’m sharing simple, practical advice to help you begin or reinvigorate your artistic journey this year. The key is to approach your creative practice with patience, kindness, and consistency. So, if you’ve ever wanted to pick up a paintbrush, start a sketchbook, or try a new medium, here’s how to do it!

1. Start Small and Keep It SimpleIt’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the idea of starting something new, but you don’t need to dive into a huge project right away. Start with small, achievable goals. This could be sketching for 10 minutes a day or experimenting with just one colour palette.

2. Create a RoutineConsistency is key. By setting aside a specific time each day (or week) for your creative practice, you’ll build a habit that becomes part of your routine. Even if it’s just a few minutes, the more often you create, the easier it becomes to stay engaged.

3. Don't Strive for PerfectionThe beauty of creativity is that it’s not about perfection; it’s about expression. Let go of the pressure to create something flawless and embrace the joy of the process. It’s okay if things don’t turn out as planned.

4. Try Different MediumsIf you’re not sure what type of art you want to explore, try a few different mediums. Watercolour, charcoal, or even collage are great ways to experiment and find your style. Don’t be afraid to mix things up!

5. Embrace the Learning CurveArt is a lifelong learning process. Be patient with yourself and enjoy the journey of improvement. Celebrate your progress, even if it feels slow.

6. Create Without PressureSet aside the idea that your art has to be for anything specific. Whether it's a relaxing hobby, a mindfulness practice, or just for fun, create without the pressure of producing something “important.”

7. Join a Creative CommunityOne of the most rewarding aspects of a creative practice is connecting with others. Joining a group, whether online or in person, can provide you with motivation, support, and inspiration. If you're looking for a space to connect with fellow artists, I invite you to join my Makings and Musings community.

8. Make Art for YourselfSometimes, we get caught up in the idea of sharing our art with others. But the true joy of creativity is in the act of making, not necessarily in the outcome. Create for yourself first, and the rest will follow naturally.

9. Get Inspired by the World Around YouLook for inspiration in everyday life—nature, the people around you, and even your emotions. Inspiration can strike anywhere, so stay open to it.

10. Celebrate Every Step of ProgressDon’t wait for a big breakthrough to celebrate. Every step, whether it’s finishing a sketch or experimenting with a new technique, is an achievement. Recognise and appreciate your progress along the way.
